The Academy for Jewish Religion, California (AJR, CA)
Located at the Yitzhak Rabin Hillel Center for Jewish Life at UCLA, The Academy for Jewish Religion, of California is a pluralistic Rabbinical and Cantorial Seminary and Chaplaincy Program. AJR, CA's Cantorial Seminary is the only Cantorial school in the Western United States and its' Dean, Hazzan Nathan Lam, is the hazzan of Stephen S. Wise Temple, the largest congregation in the world. The Cantorial Seminary trains men and women to become cantors who will be a living resource of the varied aspects of the Jewish musical tradition - with mastery of the melodies and chants for Jewish prayer, and of the music for home, school and community. This mastery, coupled with the ability to impart and inspire, includes the contemporary modes and sounds, which resonate with today's generation. Studies lead to ordination as "Hazzan and Teacher in Israel," as well as a Masters Degree in Jewish Sacred Music. The program requires solid background in Jewish learning, including full proficiency in the Hebrew language. Also required are sound musical and vocal skills. Completion of the program generally requires five years of full-time study, with part-time study options available. Cantorial students are individually coached by a practicing cantor during each semester of the program. A Master's thesis is required for ordination. AJR, CA has recently established The Greenfeld Cantorial Library of Jewish Music, an invaluable resource for cantors, soloists, musicians, students and laypeople interested in the richness of Jewish music. Archive of Israeli Music
While not providing full biographical descriptions, this finding aid to the Archive of Israeli Music at the Tel-Aviv University, David and Yolanda Katz Faculty of Arts, provides an excellent listing of Israeli musicians. It includes birth date and place of birth, major musical interests, a death date if any, when the person came to Israel, and a listing of major holding items in the archive. For an immediate, if modest, amount of biographical information for getting started with Israeli musicians, this listing is very helpful. The actual holdings in the Archive will, no doubt, reveal much more information about each composer and musician.

Sarah Aroeste
American born. Sings in Ladino, music orginally from Spain, and her family later settling in Salonika, Greece. The Aroeste sound combines and updates aspects from her 'unique family background with influx of Latin-based music in America over the past few years.' Sarah wrote: "I have a Ladino fusion band--you can check it out at www.saraharoeste.com I began this project because there are so few young people working in Ladino. I grew up on the traditional music (my family is from Salonika, Greece), but I am also influenced by other musicial styles. Not only am I a proud Sephardic Jew, but I am also a young, modern American woman! I wanted to find a musical style that could really incorporate my various identities. So I started a band a few years ago taking traditional sephardic songs from across the Mediterranean and combining them with American rock, blues and jazz. I have a 5-piece band, based in NY, and we've been traveling all over the country the past year sharing our interpretation of this exotic body of music. We just released our debut album, A la Una: In the Beginning , and invite you to check it out and listen to sound clips at www.saraharoeste.com
