Amsterdam's monthly klezmer session is at koffiehuis KHL http://www.khl.nl The jam is led by the house band, which is Amsterdam's fairly new and fairly amazing Di Fidl Kapelye. They start the session and bring in most of the repertoire, but it's open to everybody who wants to join in and start their own tunes. December's session was attended by rather experienced members of Dutch klezmer bands, no beginners. Since Veretski Pass and Budowitz were around, we had some international guests: Cookie Segelstein, Josh Horowitz and Christian Dawid.--Los Angeles-- "KOLOT HANASHEEM ~ Voices of Women."
March 14, 2004 at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino.Los Angeles Jewish Symphony
Concert of American Jewish Women Composers in March, 2004 performed by the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony under the direction of Dr. Noreen Green. This project is a public performance of an orchestral concert entitled, "KOLOT HANASHEEM ~ Voices of Women." The concert will be held on March 14, 2004 at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino. As part of the celebration of National Women's History Month in March 2004, the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony will join with other California orchestras in a statewide salute to female composers and conductors. This effort has been initiated by The Women's Philharmonic in partnership with the Association of California Symphony Orchestras. In support of this effort, LAJS' renowned conductorand founder, Dr. Noreen Green (one of California's few female conductors), will conduct a concert of music featuring the works of five contemporary female Jewish composers. This will be the only concert in the state honoring the contribution of Jewish women in this important arts endeavor. The concert will also coincide with the Symphony's 10th anniversary celebration.
The concert's repertoire will feature the works of five contemporary female Jewish composers: Deborah Drattell, Tzippi Fleischer, Maria Newman, Ruth Meyer Sacks, Andrea Clearfield and Sharon Farber. Featured works planned include Maria Newman's "The Book of Esther", and Andrea Clearfield's "Hannah" and "Miriam's Dance" from "Women of Valor. This concert will bring to the general public's attention the important contribution of women to the music world in areas where they are not appropriately recognized. It is the LAJS's intent and hope that the concert will encourage all women and especially Jewish women composers to advance their art in all forms and encourage the audience to investigate contributions of women to the fine arts and performing arts. A special marketing effort will be made to bring young high school and college women to the concert. This concert will also serve as a professional resource for aspiring Jewish and non-Jewish musicians.
Additional outcomes of the concert are to encourage the relatively newer voice of women composers to look at Jewish themes, promote the creation of new works based on Jewish themes, and continue the Symphony's relationship with artists from Israel (Farber is originally from Tel Aviv). For more information, please call Wayne Hinton at 310-478-9311 or email Lajs1@earthlink.net
