AF DI GASN FUN DER SHTOT

AF DI GASN FUN DER SHTOT-On the streets of the city-
A new collection of Yiddish songs written by Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman
Featuring: Michael Alpert, Sharon Bernstein, Adrienne Cooper, Margot Leverett, Frank London , Peter Rushefsky, Binyumin Schaechter, Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, Lorin Sklamberg, Deborah Strauss, and Theresa Tova.
This is an extraordinary album with tremendous creativity at all levels. The poetry and music of Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman is a modern miracle. To have such splendid NEW YIDDISH SONGS in 2003, --in and of itself-- makes this album quite worthwhile. In addition, special care was obviously taken to match the song with the performer, because each of the voices is especially fitted and suited to that selection, in their timbre, mood, and interpretations of the songs. Having heard numerous albums by each of the performers, I was highly impressed by the tight fit of selection to singer. New to me is the delightfully clear voice of Sharon Jan Bernstein. Adrienne Cooper and Theresa Tova were perfect in every nuance. This "all star cast" included Michael, Margot, Frank, Deborah and Lorin as listed above. The composer, Beyle Shaechter-Gottesman also sings her ballad to September 11th. With all the insight and weight of the Yiddish community's enormous losses, this song became especially poignant with the simple rendition of this memorial. One remembers that thousands of Americans attempted to express their feelings about this event in song, so it is fitting that a Yiddish song becomes such an effective conveyance to express the grief of New York. Of special note also is the maturity in Peter Rushefsky's playing. It's a pleasure to witness the growth of this rising artist in several recent albums. This album insert includes texts in Yiddish, transliteration and English translation. For more information:

This album is highly recommended by JMWC.

Eduardo Paniagua, released a CD called THE HEART'S ABODE. This CD (released by PNEUMA Records and distributed internationally by the Spanish company Karonte Records) focuses on poems from the Golden Age of the Sepharad in Al-Andalus, with Sephardic melodies and contrafactum pieces from the Andalusian-Maghrebian music of the Sufi brotherhoods and from the Moroccan and Garnati nawbat. The poems, written by Moshe and Abraham Ibn Ezra, and Shemuel Hanaguid ibn Nagrella, are played with Medieval and North African traditional instruments such as qanun (Arabic zither), Arabic lutes, fidula (ancient viola), citola (Medieval guitar), flutes and percussion (dumbek, darbuqqa, riqq, tar, sistrum), and is sung in Hebrew. Di Eybike Mame (The Eternal Mother)

Di Eybike Mame (The Eternal Mother): Women in Yiddish Theater and Popular Song, 1905-1929
Wergo SM 1625-2
Available August 4, 2003 (U.S. distribution: Harmonia Mundi USA, beginning ca. October 2003)

Wergo Records announces: to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Joel Rubin and Rita Ottens' Jewish Music Series for Wergo with "Di Eybike Mame", the first CD anthology of recordings featuring women of the Yiddish stage. This carefully edited production documents the enormous variety of music present during the period 1890-1930, from folksong to music hall and vaudeville, liturgical song to operetta and musical comedy. The booklet includes a detailed essay on Yiddish theater music and the role of women in Yiddish popular song.

Despite prohibitions in traditional Judaism against the singing of women in the presence of men, biblical figures such as Miriam and Deborah stand for a female contribution to music within Jewish history. In the 20th century, singers like Sophie Kurtzer, Shaindele and Batsheva dedicated themselves to the Jewish liturgy. Ironically known as khazntes (lit. "cantors' wives"), they were compelled to practice their art outside of the synagogue on vaudeville stages and remained exceptions to the rule despite a stylistic closeness to the great male cantors such as Yossele Rosenblatt and Gershon Sirota. Yiddish popular songs depicted a great variety of women's roles, including not only deceived girls, deserted wives and long-suffering mothers, but also suffragettes, adulteresses and eccentric spinsters. Its stars often singer, actress, dancer and impresario all rolled up into one charmed the Jewish world from Warsaw to Buenos Aires and played an important role in the expansion of gender roles. The singer and actress Bertha Kalish from Lemberg was compared favorably to the great actress Sarah Bernhardt, and Regina Prager¹s voice could have held its own with that of a Wagnerian heroine. Isa Kremer set new standards with her art song interpretations of Yiddish folksongs, the tomboyish Molly Picon wrote her own lyrics, and melodramatic Jennie Goldstein managed her own theater at the age of 16. Even today one encounters the odd 80 year-old retiree who is still enraptured by the sex appeal of Nellie Casman. ************************************

--Toronto--
The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band just released their new CD, "Sweet Return", at Hugh's Room in Toronto May 10. Their publicist sent the following announcement: "Sweet Return" is 13 tracks of some of the most unique music the Bulgars have ever produced, dancing between Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Lower East Side and Downtown Toronto. For the first time ever, each band member has composed at least one tune for the project, which features special guest, the great Grammy-nominated saxophonist, Jane Bunnett. The group has garnered rave reviews and international recognition for its joyful performance style, excellent musicianship and complex, far-ranging compositions through numerous European and North American tours and JUNO-nominated CDs. Far from the traditional Klezmer found at weddings and bar mitzvahs, the Bulgars are a dynamic force in Canadian contemporary music, combining a love for tradition with a fearless commitment to experimentation. They are the most prominent Canadian members of the international Klezmer fraternity, as well as being regarded as one of the most adventurous and accomplished Klezmer groups around. Rooted in Toronto, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band brings together the remarkable talents of six great musicians. FBKB leader and trumpeter David Buchbinder has been deeply involved with New Jewish music since forming the FBKB over 15 years ago. The other members are:
Daniel Barnes – drums and percussion
Andrew Downing – double bass and bass clarinet
Robert Stevenson – clarinet and bass clarinet
Marilyn Lerner – piano and accordion
and Dave Wall – vocals and alto saxophone.
Joining them on the CD and for the concert is special guest Jane Bunnett, an award-winning musician."

Sarah Aroeste
Sarah wrote: "I have a Ladino fusion band--you can check it out atwww.saraharoeste.com I began this project because there are so few young people working in Ladino. I grew up on the traditional music (my family is from Salonika, Greece), but I am also influenced by other musicial styles. Not only am I a proud Sephardic Jew, but I am also a young, modern American woman! I wanted to find a musical style that could really incorporate my various identities. So I started a band a few years ago taking traditional sephardic songs from across the Mediterranean and combining them with American rock, blues and jazz. I have a 5-piece band, based in NY, and we've been traveling all over the country the past year sharing our interpretation of this exotic body of music. We just released our debut album, A la Una: In the Beginning , and invite you to check it out and listen to sound clips at www.saraharoeste.com

The website has some very nice graphics and use of flash technology. A bio, photo and links included on the site. The music holds some parallels to recent WestCoast releases.

Italian Jewish Musical Traditions From the Leo Levi Collection (1954-1961)
Part of the Anthology of Music Traditions in Israel, No. 14, edited by Edwin Seroussi. Contains selections and commentaries by Francesco Spagnolo (Yuval Italia, yuval@powerlink.it) Produced in Jerusalem - Roma, 2001, by The Jewish Music Research Center, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Roma. Scholarly edition. The CD comes in a box with a booklet either in English/Hebrew or Italian/Hebrew, with an introduction to the traditional Italian Jewish music repertoires, and commentaries for each of the 42 tracks presented in the selection. Leo Levi (Casale Monferrato, 1912- Jerusalem 1982) was the first scholar who devoted his research to Italian Jewish oral musical tradition. "The recordings collected by Italian-Israeli ethnomusicologist Leo Levi throughout the 1950's constitute a unique testimony to the wealth of Italian Jewish musical traditions. The first and only extensive aural documentation of a fascinating cross-cultural world, these melodies take the listener on a musical journey across Jewish Italy, painting the portrait of a lost world. A large portion of this orally transmitted heritage was lost over the first half of the 20th century, and can only be heard in recordings." The CD is available through the Jewish Music Research Center at the Hebrew University jmrc@cc.huji.ac.il .

Evergreen
New CD: Riding Towards Life
If you want to listen to Irish music, but still support a Jewish group in Israel, then this is for you. Michal and Gal Shachar, and Eitan Hoffer along with former Riverdance percussionist, Abe Doron, founded a group that is touring Israel performing traditional Irish music. Based in Ma'ale Zvia, in the Galilee, the group, Evergreen, Yarok Ad in Hebrew, plays a host of various instruments. They have also composed some original songs in the genre. The website gives some information on purchasing a CD and going to their concerts. Maybe the music will make Israel greener, (but a little more rain would help as well). One can always hope-- and that's the brilliance of planting the Irish sound in the rockier soil of Israel. Sweet.

Two New Albums to help you Stay Calm

Ensemble Techelet
"And I will hope for Him" Contact: Yoel Tayeb. Techelet4yoel@yahoo.fr
In a world of Israel today, ravaged by daily terrors and facing unending wars, one Israeli ensemble makes a statement of peace and calm. The overwhelming nature of goodness and hope that permeates the music of Yoel Tayeb and the Ensemble Techelet is in itself a minor miracle that such music can come out of Israel today. This is a credit to the Jewish spirit,.... that despite all the furor and noise of hate, and despite being surrounded by angry men,.... the Ensemble Techelet offers respite and the sounds of quiet souls. Ensemble Techelet, started with a group of ba'alei teshuvim, newly observant Jews, all of whom had played music extensively in secular venues prior to their involvement with orthodox religion. They combine improvisation, rhythmic experimentation, Israeli themes, New Age and contemporary, and jazz in a blend that produces an interesting chamber music effect infused with Jewish mysticism. The name "techelet" comes from the name of dye used for part of the fringes on the tzitzit. Most of the music is composed by Yoel Tayeb, David Louis and Israel Edelson. Three of the songs on the album "And I will hope for Him" are arrangements of hasidic nigunim. One of the striking elements of their music is experimentation with rhythms. Ensemble Techelet has coined a word for their kind of music "MaYiM, which is an acronym for "Modern Jewish Music" (in Hebrew, "Musica Yehudit Modernit")and this is an acronym you will see more in use, I'm sure.

"At the Rebbe's Table"
by Tim Sparks
Before I say all the wonderful things about the music on this new release on the Tzadik label, let me first say how great it is to have around sound engineer Jim Anderson and digital mastermind Scott Hull, who actually have ears and make things work beautifully. It's a rare day that I'm struck with how nicely something is recorded in that you can hear every note totally distinctly and at exactly the right mix. Nothing is blurred, muffled or otherwise muted improperly. Great sound with unusual clarity. Now to the content of the album.

Tim Sparks, steel-string acoustic guitar, Mark Ribot, nylon-string acoustic guitar, Erik Friedlander, cello, Greg Cohen, bass, and Cyro Baptista, percussion. If you need some music as you cuddle with that favorite book, here's something to enjoy that's Jewish, very modern with enough intellectual base, yet very contemporary and pleasant. There's nothing banal, but only refreshing intricate arrangements of some traditional songs, including Nafule Brandwein's "fun tashlach" (Returning from the River) and "firn di mekhutonim aheym" (Walking the In-Laws Home) and two arrangements of songs by Flory Jagoda, "the Keys from Spain" and "Todos Si Hueron". Combining and turning is part of the essence of this album, such as the Ashkenzai klezmer with Sephardic tunes and more modern compositions keep this album very fresh. One of the striking pieces is "Mahashav" by John Zorn. "Mashav", is a song that continually morphs from one place to another, including sounds echoing Bach, traditional Spanish guitar repetoire, klezmer, Jewish, jazz and modern and back again, but seemlessly and never jarring. Two of the klezmer tunes will be familiar to fans of Abe Schwartz, "Baym Rebn's Sude" (from which the album takes it's name loosely) and "Sadagora Chasidl." In "Beatufiul City",(Kirya Yefefiya) Sparks and Ribot's guitars intertwine in a most graceful way, building on the traditional song but making it truly a totally new hearing. Similar impressive ensemble playing is displayed thoughout, characterized by intimacy, warmth and closeness. Honestly, great for that dinner party, too, from suburbia to your NYC apartment.
