American Reform cantor and opera singer. Born in New York City. Attended Manhattan High School of Music & Art. B.A. in vocal performance, Manhattan School of Music. Master of Sacred Music, 1986, Hebrew Union College. Also attended SF School of Psychology. Made Carnegie Hall debut with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of New York. 1974-77, Israel National Opera. 1987 began as Cantor of the Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco. Won Liederkranz Award and the Minna Kaufman Ruud Foundation prize. CD: "The Jewish Soul".

Jack Beilan & Friends
Jack Beilen & Friends, from Los Angeles, opened up a new website to promote the new CD From the Heart of a Jewish Soul which features 21 musicians, all with extensive professional experience in the pop music world (such as members working with various popular artists James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Celine Dion, Rod Stewart or Neville Brothers). The group is also available for selected appropriate synagogue and spiritual events and performances. They performed on December 3, 2000, at the Theatre For The Performing Arts at California State University at Northridge. The music is aimed at Reform congregations and those welcoming contemporary-influenced Jewish spiritual music. Jack Beilan has been Musical Director for Valley Outreach Synagogue, a Reform Jewish congregation in Los Angeles.

Ben Steinberg
Ben Steinberg is a well-known contemporary synagogue composer with numerous awards and achievements, living in Toronto and currently serving as Director of Music at Temple Sinai in Toronto, Canada. Steinberg has composed for orchestra, chamber ensemble, chorus and solo voice. Many of his works are published by Transcontinental in New York.

Daniel Ben Shalom
Daniel ben Shalom has a new CD, Tefilati. "Contempory original musical artist from Israel combining jazz, blues, rock and more with the essence of spirituality and soul." That's what the website says. The music is an interesting blend of Yeshivish orthorock with some cool jazz and a bit of blues and Calpop and even a bit of samba thrown in. The website has some very nice graphics and use of flash technology. A bio, photo and links included on the site. The music holds some parallels to recent WestCoast releases.

Herman Berlinski
Herman Berlinski, the great composer of Jewish music, including synagogue organ music, was born in Leipzig on August 18, 1910. He studied piano, composition and conducting at the Leipzig Conservatory 1927-1932. He studied at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris from 1934-1938, and the Schola Cantorum from 1937-1939. He emigrated to the United States in 1941. This article explores some of his life and the performances of some of his music in Europe.

Binyomin Ginzberg has coined a new word to define his Jewish music: "Yeshivish". It defines one of the musical styles he performs with his small ensemble in New York. Brandeis University Radio: WBRS
Brandeis University's radio station has three Sunday programs relating to Jewish music. At 11:00, hosted by Shachar Gilad, is Kol Yisrael which features Israeli music. At 12:30 is a program entitled Just Like You hosted by Forsan Hussein and Michael Bravly which has talk and music about Palestinian and Israeli music. At 2:00 is The Yiddish Hour with host Sara Ravid. Students wishing to participate or share music for any of these shows should contact the main station number at 781-736-5277. WBRS has a policy to play the music it receives.

Budapester Klezmer Band
The first Jewish band founded in Hungary since the Holocaust, the Budapester Klezmer band was started in 1990 by Ferenc Javori. The tremendous goal they set for themselves is the reclamation of Jewish musical traditions in Hungary. The group has participated in international music festivals and has 3 CDs, one published by Harmonia Mundi.

Budowitz Sacred and Secular
Budowitz is an ensemble that plays nineteenth century klezmer music on original instruments. The musicians in this group provide a sound steeped both in musicological and historical knowledge as well as the subtlety and coloration described by the reviewers as "pure emotion." Budowitz is staffed by leading lights in the klezmer world including Joshua Horowitz and Merlin Shepherd. Of special note is an interview with Budowitz as well as a history of klezmer.
